A classic portrait lens updated for Sony E full-frame mirrorless systems, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN is a prime lens from the Art series characterised by its advanced and updated optical design, elegant profile and bright construction. The maximum aperture of f/1.4 allows working in low-light conditions and also offers better depth of field control to achieve shallow depth of field effects. The optical configuration incorporates a series of low-dispersion, aspherical and high-refractive-index elements, and its large-diameter design delivers a remarkable degree of clarity and sharpness with well-controlled distortion and aberrations. In addition, a Super Multi-Layer coating enhances image quality by eliminating reflections and ghosting for improved contrast and colour fidelity in bright lighting conditions.
The optical balance is complemented by a refined exterior design, which includes a physical aperture ring, which can be declicked or locked, as well as a dedicated focus mode switch and AFL button for intuitive and tactile control. For autofocus, a stepping motor is used, which maintains a lightweight and compact design while delivering fast and near-silent focusing performance for both photo and video applications. Furthermore, the lens features an 11-blade rounded aperture for smooth bokeh quality and the lens body is also weather-sealed to suit working in challenging conditions.
Features
- As a member of Sigma's Global Vision series Art line, this lens is designed to achieve truly remarkable optical performance and is ideally suited to creative and artistic applications.
- The portrait lens is designed for Sony E full-frame mirrorless cameras but can also be used with APS-C models where it provides an equivalent focal length of 127.5mm.
- The bright maximum aperture of f/1.4 is particularly well suited for working in ambient light and offers extensive depth of field control to isolate subjects with selective focus.
- Five Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements significantly reduce chromatic aberrations and colour fringing for improved clarity and colour accuracy.
- One aspherical element and four high-refractive-index glass elements control spherical aberrations and distortion for increased sharpness and accurate rendering.
- A Super Multi-Layer coating has been applied to the lens elements to minimise reflections and ghosting and help produce images with rich contrast and neutral colour, even when shooting into the light.
- The built-in stepping motor enables fast and silent autofocus, which is further enhanced by an optimised AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance.
- The manual aperture ring can be declicked for smooth and silent aperture changes to benefit video applications. In addition, a dedicated aperture ring lock switch can also be used to prevent accidental changes to the aperture setting.
- The built-in autofocus lock (AFL) button, to which additional functions can be assigned, expands the range of operations available on the lens.
- The eleven-blade rounded aperture contributes to smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
- Weather-sealed construction with a brass bayonet mount that offers improved mounting precision and greater rigidity.
