Laowa 105mm f/2 STF Lens
Designed to offer extended control over the quality of blur and to enhance bokeh, the Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus lens from Venus Optics is a short telephoto lens designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. The unique optical design incorporates an apodisation (APD) element, along with two separate aperture diaphragms — 8 and 14 blades — allowing separate adjustment of bokeh as well as exposure and depth of field. This APD element acts as a radial graduated neutral density filter, thereby limiting light transmission to a T-stop value of 3.2, whilst maintaining the depth of field and selective focus qualities of a true f/2 design. Beyond the unique attributes of the APD element, the lens also incorporates three low-dispersion elements and one high-refractive-index element to control chromatic aberrations and colour fringing, as well as to produce high overall clarity and sharpness. The lens is also characterised by its manual focus and manual aperture design, which offers extended control over focus and exposure to facilitate working with the APD element. Features - A short telephoto lens designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras, this lens can also be used on APS-C models where it offers an equivalent focal length of 157.5 mm. - The optical design incorporates an apodisation element that helps improve bokeh quality. This element, which resembles a radial graduated ND filter that transitions from a clear centre to denser edges, produces more circular blur areas for more pleasing selective focus and shallow depth of field effects. - To control the effect of the apodisation element, two separate diaphragms are integrated into the lens design: a 14-blade diaphragm that works primarily in conjunction with the APD element to control bokeh, as well as a standard 8-blade diaphragm at the rear of the lens design to control overall light transmission and affect depth of field. - Due to the incorporation of the APD element, the lens offers an effective light transmission value of T3.2, whilst the f/2 designation relates primarily to the selective focus potential and depth of field control. - Beyond the APD element, the lens also includes three low-dispersion elements and one high-refractive-index element, which combine to limit chromatic aberrations across the full aperture range and contribute to a high degree of sharpness and clarity. - A manual focus design allows precise control for focusing down to a distance of 3' with a maximum magnification of 0.16x. - Two manual aperture rings allow you to adjust both the aperture affecting exposure and the aperture affecting the APD.
