An updated classic wide-angle lens for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless systems, the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN is a prime lens from the Art series characterised by its advanced and updated optical design, elegant profile, and bright design. The maximum aperture of f/1.4 enables working in low-light conditions and also offers increased depth-of-field control for achieving shallow depth-of-field effects. The optical construction integrates two SLD (Special-Low Dispersion) elements, one ELD (Extra-Low Dispersion) element, and one FLD (Low Dispersion) element. It also includes two aspherical elements and high refractive index elements to achieve a remarkable degree of sharpness and clarity with well-controlled distortion and aberrations. Additionally, a Super Multi-Layer coating improves image quality by eliminating flare and ghosting for better contrast and colour fidelity in harsh lighting conditions.
Complementing the optics, the refined exterior design includes a physical aperture ring, which can be de-clicked or locked, along with a dedicated focus mode switch and an AFL button for intuitive, tactile control. For autofocus, a stepping motor is used, maintaining a lightweight and compact design whilst promoting fast and near-silent focusing performance for photo and video applications. Furthermore, the lens features an 11-blade rounded aperture for smooth bokeh quality and the lens body is also weather-sealed to suit working in challenging weather conditions.
- As a member of Sigma's Global Vision series Art line, this lens is designed to achieve truly remarkable optical performance and is ideally suited to creative and artistic applications.
- The wide-angle lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, but can also be used with APS-C models where it provides an equivalent focal length of 52.5 mm.
- The bright maximum aperture of f/1.4 is particularly well suited to available-light work and offers extended depth-of-field control to isolate subjects with selective focus.
- Lens construction: 15 elements in 11 groups, comprising one FLD low-dispersion element, one ELD extra-low dispersion element, two SLD special-low dispersion elements, and two aspherical elements.
- A Super Multi-Layer coating has been applied to the lens elements to minimise flare and ghosting and help produce contrast-rich and colour-neutral images, even in backlit conditions. The water- and oil-repellent coating allows easy wiping of oil and water from the front surface of the lens and prevents oil and grease from adhering for easy cleaning.
- The built-in stepping motor enables fast and silent internal autofocus, which is further enhanced by an optimised AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. Face and eye detection is supported on cameras equipped with this feature.
- The manual aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth and silent aperture changes, which is beneficial for video applications. Additionally, a dedicated aperture ring lock switch can also be used to prevent accidental changes to the aperture setting.
- The built-in autofocus lock button (AFL), to which additional functions can be assigned, extends the range of operations available on the lens.
- The eleven-blade rounded aperture contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
- Weather-sealed construction with a brass bayonet mount offering improved mounting precision and rigidity.
