Canon 5056C008 - RF 1200mm f/8 L IS USM
Colossal focal length, lightweight design
With an unmatched length and a compact, lightweight design, the Canon RF 1200mm f/8 L IS USM is a super-telephoto lens offering a premium blend of optical quality, intuitive handling, and professional durability. With one of the longest focal lengths available, this lens excels in wildlife and sports photography applications, providing unique close-up views of distant subjects. Combined with responsive autofocus, appropriate image stabilisation, and a surprisingly lightweight design, the 1200mm f/8 is a specialised lens with a versatile feature set.
L-series optics
- Featuring an optical design based on previous EF and RF super-telephoto lenses, this lens presents premium optics designed for the most demanding shooting applications.
- Two fluorite elements, one Super Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) element, and one UD element virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations for exceptional clarity and colour accuracy, with no chromatic aberrations or fringing.
- The advanced optical design also contributes to this RF mirrorless lens's more streamlined, portable form.
- Air Sphere and Super Spectra coatings enhance image quality by maintaining high contrast and colour fidelity while reducing flare and ghosting when shooting in bright lighting conditions.
- The nine-blade rounded aperture diaphragm contributes to smooth bokeh quality.
USM autofocus and image stabilisation
- The ultrasonic motor delivers fast, precise, and virtually silent autofocus performance, benefiting both photo and video applications.
- An impressive minimum focusing distance of 4.3 m and a maximum magnification of 0.29x are well suited for working with close subjects, such as wildlife at short range, birds, and athletes.
- Variable-speed manual focus offers three options for improved focus control, and real-time manual focus support allows focus adjustments without changing mode.
- Two focus presets can be saved for instant recall at a specified focusing distance.
- The focus range limiter improves responsiveness by restricting the usable focus range.
- Benefiting handheld and monopod shooting, the optical image stabiliser compensates for 4 stops of camera shake for sharper images. Due to the long focal length, in-body image stabilisation, or coordinated IS, from EOS R series bodies is not supported with this lens.
Intuitive handling and professional reliability
- Relatively light and compact, this 1200mm f/8 lens weighs 3.34 kg and measures 53.7 cm in length, making it realistically usable on a monopod or even handheld for short periods.
- The built-in rotating tripod collar is suited for working with the lens on a monopod or tripod and allows quick switching between portrait and landscape orientations.
- Weather-sealed construction for reliable use in challenging weather conditions.
- The fluorine coating on the front element helps repel moisture, dust, and fingerprints and is also easier to clean.
- Distinctive heat-resistant white finish.
- Accepts 52 mm drop-in filters towards the rear of the lens.
- Compatible with optional Extender RF 1.4x and 2x teleconverters to further extend the effective reach of this lens.
