The Cucoloris is used to create shadow patterns on backgrounds or subjects. A uniformly lit wall can be transformed into interesting areas of light and shadow. Directors of photography frequently use it to simulate sunlight filtering through trees. Whilst wooden "cookies" create a distinctive pattern, the Cello "cookie" projects a more subtle pattern. The pattern itself depends on the distance from the light source and the distance from the background.
