Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens (Cine)
Described as "weird but brilliant", the Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe lens for Canon EF mount from Venus Optics is a truly unique lens designed for close-up shooting. Characterised by its long, slender body, this macro lens offers a maximum magnification of 2:1 with a minimum focusing distance of 1.5' and a minimum working distance of 0.8". Even with such a short working distance, the lens measures 1.3' in length, placing you at a comfortable distance for photographing close-up subjects. Additionally, as a wide-angle lens, a greater depth of field is offered compared to traditional telephoto macro lenses, allowing more background detail with less subject isolation.
The optical design incorporates extra-low dispersion and high refractive index elements, which help to suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness, colour accuracy and clarity. Manual focus control allows focusing from 1.5' to infinity, and the front of the lens is equipped with a built-in ring LED light to facilitate focusing at short distances. The thin 0.2" diameter at the front of the lens body also provides better opportunities for front-lighting subjects. Furthermore, the front part of the lens is waterproof and allows working with subjects just below the water surface or in dusty or challenging environments.
This "cine-mod" version of the lens has been optimised for video use and includes built-in gears on the aperture and focus rings to make iris and focus adjustments using a follow focus.
Features
- Unique macro lens design offering a maximum magnification greater than life-size of 2:1 with a minimum focusing distance of 1.5' and a working distance of only 0.8".
- The long tubular lens body helps produce a distinctive insect-like perspective and, despite the short working distance, the length of the lens body places the camera at a comfortable shooting distance.
- The 24mm wide-angle focal length offers greater depth of field and more environmental detail than traditional telephoto macro designs, which tend to isolate the subject with shallow depth of field.
- The optical design incorporates two extra-low dispersion elements that control colour fringing and chromatic aberrations to produce greater sharpness and improved colour accuracy. A high refractive index element is also present, which reduces spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
- The thin 0.8" front diameter allows unique "insertion" shots and offers a greater range of close-up and discreet shooting opportunities. The smaller front diameter also facilitates front-lighting of close-up subjects.
- The front of the lens is waterproof, allowing you to work comfortably just below the water surface or in dusty environments.
- The front of the lens is equipped with a built-in ring LED light powered via a micro-USB port on the body, providing illumination on close-up subjects to facilitate focusing.
- Designed to be used as a close-up macro lens, the manual focus operation also allows you to focus to infinity.
- This "cine-mod" version of the lens is fitted with built-in focus and aperture gears to facilitate focus and iris adjustments.
- The seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
