Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens (Standard)
Described as "weird but brilliant", the Venus Optics Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe lens in Sony E mount is a truly unique lens designed for close-up photography. Distinguished by its long, slim lens barrel, this macro lens offers a maximum magnification of 2:1 with a minimum focusing distance of 1.5' and a minimum working distance of 0.8". Even with such a close working distance, the lens measures 1.3' in length, placing you at a comfortable distance to photograph close subjects. Furthermore, as a wide-angle lens, a greater depth of field is offered compared to traditional telephoto macro lenses, allowing you to capture more background detail with less subject isolation.
The optical design includes extra-low dispersion and additional refractive index elements, which help suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations for a high degree of clarity, colour accuracy and sharpness. Manual focus control allows focusing from 1.5' to infinity, and the front of the lens features an integrated LED light ring to facilitate focusing at short distances. The slim 0.2" diameter of the front of the lens barrel also provides greater opportunities for front-lighting subjects. Additionally, the front section of the lens is waterproof, allowing you to work with subjects just below the water's surface or in other dusty or challenging environments.
Features
- This prime wide-angle lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, but can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide an equivalent focal length of 36mm.
- The unique macro lens design offers a maximum magnification greater than life-size at 2:1, along with a minimum focusing distance of 1.5' and a working distance of only 0.8".
- The long, tubular lens barrel helps produce a distinctive "bug's eye" perspective and, despite the short working distance, the length of the lens barrel places the camera at a comfortable shooting distance.
- The 24mm wide-angle focal length offers greater depth of field and more environmental detail than traditional telephoto macro designs, which tend to isolate the subject with a shallow depth of field.
- The optical design includes two low-dispersion elements that control colour fringing and chromatic aberrations to produce greater clarity and colour accuracy. An additional refractive index element is also present, which reduces spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
- The slim 0.8" front diameter allows for unique "sliding" shots and provides a greater range of close-up and discreet shooting opportunities. The smaller front diameter also makes it easier to front-light close-up subjects.
- The front of the lens is also waterproof, allowing you to work comfortably just below the water's surface or in dusty environments.
- The front of the lens also features an integrated LED light ring, powered via a micro-USB port on the barrel, to provide illumination on close-up subjects for easier focusing.
- Designed for use as a close-up macro lens, manual focus also allows you to focus to infinity.
- The seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
