Sigma has produced a remarkable lens through its complete optical and structural redesign of the 18-250 mm design. Its compact size is further complemented by its minimum focusing distance of just 35 cm (a reproduction ratio of 1:2.9). It is also remarkably stable across different temperatures thanks to its TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) construction.
The 18-250 mm focal range covers all focal lengths for everyday photography — from wide angle to long telephoto, and it is designed exclusively for APS-C size sensors found in most digital SLRs.
Among the other key features are a hardened brass bayonet mount and optical image stabilisation to facilitate handheld shooting in low light or for action shots and to prevent blur caused by camera shake. A Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures fast and silent focusing, a rounded aperture delivers natural blur effects and the optics feature Super Multi-Layer coatings to help reduce unwanted ghosting and flare effects.
Features
Excellent for macro photography
Close-up shooting capability is enhanced with a minimum focusing distance of 35 cm across the entire zoom range, and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9. In APS-C equivalent, macro photography with a magnification ratio of approximately 1:2 is possible. Moreover, with this lens, the size and framing of subjects can be adjusted by rotating the zoom ring, making macro photography easier than with a fixed focal length macro lens. For convenience, the maximum magnification ratio at each focusing distance appears on the side of the lens barrel.
Revolutionising the basic design for a compact size
Optimisation of the element layout, including the incorporation of double-sided aspherical lenses, and a redesign of the structure have made it possible to reduce the filter diameter size. This compact lens features a high zoom ratio of approximately 13x with a 62 mm diameter filter, and dimensions of 73.5 mm diameter x 88.6 mm length. It ensures portability and overall ease of use, making it perfect for travel and leisure photography.
New TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) material
The new "TSC (Thermally Stable Composite)" material, which exhibits low contractility, particularly during temperature changes, while maintaining its firmness, is incorporated into the lens barrel. Compared to commonly used polycarbonate, TSC offers approximately 25% superior elasticity. As thermal shrinkage is low, it has a strong affinity with metal parts, contributing to the manufacture of high-quality products. It also helps to make parts such as the zoom ring and scale thinner.
Brass bayonet mount
This lens incorporates a brass bayonet mount that offers both high precision and great durability, identical to the camera body mount. A special treatment to improve durability is applied to the surface, making it a high-quality lens resistant to long-term use.
Optical Stabiliser (OS)
Sigma's unique Optical Stabiliser (OS) function is integrated. It provides effective correction of approximately 4 stops, which helps to compensate for camera shake even in macro photography where slight blur can be easily identified. When shooting a moving subject such as motor sport, it automatically detects camera movement and provides effective correction of camera shake.
NB. The effectiveness of the OS will progressively decrease as the shooting distance shortens.
Superior optical performance
The SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element provides excellent chromatic aberration correction. Three aspherical lenses, including a double-sided aspherical lens, combined with the latest design, prevent and correct all types of aberrations, including astigmatism, enabling high-quality images to be obtained across the entire zoom range.
Flare and ghosting conscious design
From the earliest stages, flare and ghosting are carefully measured to establish a design resistant to strong incident light such as backlighting. The Super Multi-Layer coating reduces flare and ghosting, and provides sharp, high-contrast images even in backlit conditions. The supplied petal-shaped lens hood can be attached to block stray light that has a negative influence on the lens's rendering, and to prevent internal reflections from occurring.
Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) is integrated
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures fast and silent autofocus.
