Neutral density filters reduce the amount of light passing through the lens without changing the colour of the scene. Particularly useful in bright conditions to avoid overexposure. They also allow correct exposure with a wider aperture to reduce depth of field in order to highlight a main subject by rendering the foreground and/or background blurred.
