Tiffen 138mm WW IR Polarising Filter

The Tiffen 138mm WW IR Polarising Filter is a combination of linear polariser and near-infrared to infrared control filter designed for digital cinematography. When this filter is used, it helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering light that has become polarised due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. Simultaneously, near-infrared light waves starting at 680nm are blocked at approximately 80% and infrared light waves at higher frequencies are further impeded until nearly flat attenuation is achieved at 720nm.
This filter is useful as many digital cinema cameras are designed to maximise their ability to capture red hues, and in this process, near-infrared or infrared contamination can occur. If the proportion of near-infrared or infrared light reaching the sensor of a digital cinematography camera becomes too great, the results may show undesirable colour shifts, particularly in dark areas of the image such as shadows where the appearance of black is dominant.
Whilst helping to preserve colour accuracy when using a digital cinema camera, the Tiffen 138mm WW IR Polarising Filter also addresses the effect of sunlight becoming partially polarised due to reflection from electrons in air molecules, causing light to scatter in what appears as haze. A polarising filter organises and filters this polarised light directionally perpendicular to the reflected light, allowing absorption of much of this light. This results in a notable reduction in glare and reflections on non-metallic surfaces and an increase in saturation of skies and foliage.
A linear polariser differs from a circular polariser in that it does not contain an additional quarter-wave plate. The addition of a quarter-wave plate serves to circularly polarise linearly polarised light for the use of autofocus and automatic exposure functions. Due to the way light is broken down and filtered with a linear polariser, the camera's autofocus and automatic exposure accuracy becomes distorted during use. When light becomes circularly polarised, it allows the use of these functions.
This filter is recommended when not using the camera's built-in exposure metering or autofocus. It is uncoated and has a 3x filter factor which results in an exposure reduction of 1.6 stops. Constructed from Water White optical glass, the Tiffen 138mm WW IR Polarising Filter has a diameter of 138mm and is mounted for use in third-party or custom filter holders. It is manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting it on precision metal rings. No front or rear threading is included on this filter's ring or mount.
- Mounted without front or rear threading for use in third-party or custom filter holders for cinema and television cameras
- Designed for use with CCD or CMOS sensors to filter near-infrared and infrared light pollution that causes colour shifts frequently associated with high-definition recording whilst helping to reduce reflections and glare by filtering light that has become polarised due to reflection from a non-metallic surface
- Blocks near-infrared light waves starting at 680nm at approximately 80% until nearly flat infrared attenuation is achieved at 720nm
- Eliminates haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated and vibrant colours
- Strongest polarising effect when used at a 90° angle to the sun
- Recommended when not using the camera's built-in exposure metering or autofocus
- Uncoated
- 3.0x filter factor reducing exposure by 1.6 stops
- Constructed from Water White glass for increased optical clarity
- Filter pouch for storage and transport
