Tiffen 77mm Linear Polarising Filter
 
The Tiffen 77mm Linear Polarising Filter helps reduce reflections and glare by filtering polarised light due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. Sunlight becomes naturally partially polarised by reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing light to scatter appearing as haze. A polarising filter organises and filters this directionally polarised light perpendicular to the reflected light, allowing absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of reflections and glare on non-metallic surfaces and an increase in saturation of skies and vegetation.
A linear polariser differs from a circular polariser only in the absence of a quarter-wave plate allowing the use of autofocus and exposure functions. Linear polarisers are better suited to manual cameras, such as view cameras, which do not rely on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.
Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting it in precision metal rings.
