Tiffen 55mm NATural IRND 0.9 (3 stops) filter
The Tiffen 55mm NATural IRND 0.9 filter is an ND filter with an 8x filter factor that provides a 3-stop exposure reduction. Its 0.9 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing down your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you can more easily control depth of field and convey motion. Neutral density filters are designed not to affect image colouration and are ideal for pairing with other filters.
The design of this filter has been optimised for use with digital sensors and to promote nearly uniform attenuation of visible and infrared light. Due to the increased sensitivity of imaging sensors to infrared light, compared to traditional film, colour casts can occur when photographing darker subjects requiring longer exposure times.
This filter is uncoated, it is manufactured from water-white glass for increased clarity, and features an aluminium alloy filter ring for durability whilst remaining lightweight. It is manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and polishing it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.
