The Tiffen Image Maker Contrast Control Filter Kit is used to control lighting ratios when shooting traditional film or video.
Soft Contrast
This filter reduces contrast in the opposite manner to the Low Contrast filter series. This filter absorbs light by diminishing highlight areas whilst maintaining the darker appearance of shadow areas. In other words, hot spots or bright areas of the image are reduced whilst shadow areas remain dark.
Ultra Contrast Filter
The Ultra Contrast works by using ambient light surrounding the image area as well as light within the image area itself. It reduces contrast uniformly, with little to no loss of sharpness throughout the scene, even when there are varying degrees of brightness in the image.
Shadow areas are opened up, revealing more detail, but without glare or halation from direct light sources or bright reflections. Works similarly to a Tiffen Low Contrast filter but reduces contrast throughout the entire image whereas a Low Contrast filter will only open up shadows.
Low Contrast
Tiffen Low Contrast filters work by spreading light from highlights to shadowed and darker areas, leaving bright areas of the image bright. Dark areas become lighter, allowing you to see more detail in shadow areas. Since there is no f-stop compensation, you will not overexpose any part of the image.
This filter also creates a very slight glare or halation around hot spots and individual light sources. This characteristic is a useful effect. The more light there is for the filter to work with, the greater the effect. This filter is very popular with people shooting video but wanting to achieve a more cinematic look to their images.
Soft Contrast Filter
- Results in a reduction of contrast
- This filter, like the Low Contrast filter, will cause slight glare or halation
- The Soft Contrast filter has a neutral grey appearance, which reduces exposure
- Although this may seem necessary, Tiffen does not recommend any exposure compensation as this would negate the filter's effect
Ultra Contrast Filter
- Bright lights or sunlight create problems when the ratio between highlight and shadow areas exceeds film latitude; if you expose for highlights, shadows appear without detail; if you expose for shadows, the result is washed-out, overly bright highlights
- Contrast reduction is achieved by lightening shadows without overexposing highlights or by darkening highlights without further darkening shadows
- Even shooting directly towards the sun produces no glare or halation
Low Contrast Filter
- This filter also creates a very slight glare or halation around hot spots and individual light sources - this characteristic is a useful effect - as with a candle
- The more light there is for the filter to work with, the greater the effect
- This filter is very popular with people shooting video but wanting to achieve a more cinematic look to their images
