The Tiffen 4 x 4" Soft Contrast 3 glass filter reduces contrast in a manner opposite to the Low Contrast filter series. This filter absorbs light by reducing highlight areas while maintaining the dark appearance of shadow areas. In other words, hot spots or bright areas of the image are reduced while shadow areas remain dark.

Note: Soft Contrast filters are available in grades 1-5, with No. 5 having the most pronounced effect

- This filter, like the Low Contrast filter, will cause a slight halo or diffusion effect
- The Soft Contrast filter has a neutral grey appearance, which reduces exposure
- Although this may seem necessary, Tiffen does not recommend any exposure compensation as this would cancel out the filter's effect
