The Tiffen 4 x 4" Warm Soft/FX 3 filter diffuses strong light entering the lens and produces a halo effect. Although the resulting image appears softer and more ethereal, there is little loss of clarity or detail. This filter works by diffusing the light entering the lens with small aberrations; by distributing the light more evenly, a soft halo is created rather than the sharp, well-defined image obtained when shooting without a filter. Density 3 provides more softening than 2, but less than 4.

This filter also combines the diffusion effect with an 812 warming filter to bring overall warmth to the image and enhance skin tones. This warming effect also helps to reduce blue sensitivity and soften overly cool tones in the scene.

Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and polishing it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 4 x 4" / 101.6 x 101.6 mm.
