The Tiffen 4 x 4" Circular UltraPol filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering polarised light caused by reflection from non-metallic surfaces.

Sunlight naturally becomes partially polarised when it reflects off electrons in air molecules, which causes light to scatter as haze. A polarising filter organises and filters this directionally polarised light perpendicular to the reflected light, allowing much of this light to be absorbed. This results in a noticeable reduction in reflections and glare on non-metallic surfaces and increased saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polariser differs from a linear polariser only in the addition of a quarter-wave plate to the linear polarising filter. The addition of this quarter-wave plate allows linearly polarised light to be circularly polarised for use with autofocus and exposure functions. Due to the way light is broken down and filtered with a linear polariser, the accuracy of autofocus and exposure is compromised during use. When light becomes circularly polarised, it allows the use of these functions.

This uncoated filter has an average light transmission of approximately 40% and is designed to provide a polarisation effect that is 15 to 20% superior to other Tiffen filters that only provide a linear or circular polarisation effect and are not UltraPol filters.

The Tiffen 4 x 4" Circular UltraPol filter is made from Water White glass for better clarity and colour fidelity.
