This filter works by diffusing light entering the lens through a mesh pattern, creating a soft, uniform glow. The black distinction helps maintain the overall contrast of the scene by reducing overall light diffusion in the shadows. Density 3 provides more softening than 2, but less than 4.

Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 optical glass plates and polishing it to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 4 x 5.65" / 101.6 x 143.5mm.
