The Tiffen 4 x 4" Soft/FX Black Pro-Mist 1/4 filter is a combination of the Soft/FX and Black Pro-Mist filters. The 1/2 density of the Soft/FX provides slight softening and diffuses bright light entering the lens to produce a halo effect. Although the resulting image appears softer and more ethereal, there is little loss of clarity or detail. This filter works by diffusing the light entering the lens with small aberrations; by distributing the light more evenly, a soft halo is created rather than the sharp, well-defined image obtained without a filter.
The Black Pro-Mist helps reduce highlight values while slightly decreasing overall contrast. This filter is particularly useful for softening and smoothing facial wrinkles and other imperfections. Although designed for cinematographic use, this filter can also be used for fashion and beauty applications. Unlike a traditional diffusion or blur filter, Pro-Mist filters offer little loss of detail across the entire image. The 1/4 density offers more contrast and highlight reduction than the 1/8, but less than the 1/2, whilst allowing a soft, pastel light quality.
Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding it to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 4 x 4" / 101.6 x 101.6 mm.
