Sony 40.5mm Drop-in Circular Polarizing Filter

This Sony drop-in circular polarizing filter helps reduce reflections and glare by filtering light that has become polarized due to reflection on a non-metallic surface. It is specially designed to fit into the accessory filter slot of the Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens, whose front diameter is too large to accommodate a screw-in filter. With this lens, the effect of this filter occurs behind the main glass elements instead of in front.
Sunlight naturally becomes partially polarized when reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing light to scatter as haze. A polarizing filter organizes and filters this directionally polarized light perpendicular to the reflected light, allowing much of this light to be absorbed. This results in a noticeable reduction in glare and reflections on non-metallic surfaces and increased saturation of skies and foliage.
A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer by the addition of a quarter-wave plate in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter-wave plate allows linearly polarized light to be circularly polarized for the use of autofocus and exposure functions. Due to the way light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, the accuracy of autofocus and exposure becomes distorted during use. When light becomes circularly polarized, it allows the use of these functions.
This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity and includes a built-in locking mechanism to secure it in the compatible lens, as well as an external dial allowing rotation of the filter glass to control the polarization effect.
