The Tiffen 4 x 5.65" ND 1.2 Graduated Neutral Density filter allows the photographer to adjust exposure without affecting colour balance.
Neutral density filters are available in 1, 2, 3 or 4 stops to suit every situation.
It is often necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity of one part of the scene with another. This is particularly true in situations where you do not have full control over the lighting, such as in bright and high-contrast landscapes. An exposure for the foreground will produce a washed-out and overexposed sky, whilst an exposure for the sky will leave the foreground dark and underexposed. This filter allows the cloud details in the image to be correctly exposed.
Determining which graduated neutral density filter gives ideal results for a given lighting situation requires knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Choose the filter density that adjusts the lighting to remain within the exposure latitude (greatest difference between light/dark values) that still shows detail in the digital medium or film being used.
The Soft or Hard indication shows the degree of colour graduation. Horizontal/Vertical indicates the direction of the graduation.
Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced by a process that permanently laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass ground to tolerances of one ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounted in precision aluminium rings.
Neutral density filters have four main uses
-Allow the use of slow shutter speeds, particularly with high ISOs, to record the movement of subjects such as waterfalls, clouds or cars
-Decrease depth of field by allowing the use of wider apertures, which helps to separate subjects from their background
-Decrease the effective ISO of high-sensitivity films (above 400 ISO) and allow their use outdoors in bright situations
-Allow film and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes that could cause overexposure
ColorCore Technology
-Tiffen's ColorCore glass is sealed between two sheets of optical glass. In this way, Tiffen can better control the different densities of their filters and thus create more precise degrees of filtration. This process allows for greater colour accuracy compared to simply tinted glass which can be subject to variations during the tinting process
Superior Quality
-The largest Hollywood film studios trust Tiffen filters for their multi-million dollar productions. Superior quality and design make Tiffen the preferred choice of filmmakers, professional photographers and even NASA
-Tiffen has also received an Emmy from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for engineering excellence
