The Tiffen 5 x 5" Linear Polarising Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering light that has become polarised due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. Sunlight naturally becomes partially polarised due to reflection off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into haze. A polarising filter organises and filters this directionally polarised light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of reflections and glare on non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A linear polariser differs from a circular polariser in that it does not contain an additional quarter-wave plate. The addition of a quarter-wave plate serves to circularly polarise linearly polarised light for the use of autofocus and exposure functions. Due to the way light is broken down and filtered with a linear polariser, the camera's autofocus and exposure accuracy is skewed during use. When light becomes circularly polarised, it enables the use of these functions.

This filter is recommended when you are not using the camera's exposure metering or autofocus. It is uncoated and offers an average light transmission of approximately 40%.

Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 optical glass plates and grinding it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.
