The Tiffen 5.65 x 5.65" Linear Polarising Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering polarised light due to reflections from non-metallic surfaces. Sunlight becomes naturally partially polarised by reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing a scattering of light that appears as haze. A polarising filter arranges and filters this polarised light directionally perpendicular to the reflected light, allowing the absorption of much of this light. This results in a notable reduction of reflections and glare on non-metallic surfaces and an increase in saturation of skies and foliage. A linear polariser differs from a circular polariser in that it does not contain an additional quarter-wave plate. The addition of a quarter-wave plate serves to circularly polarise the linearly polarised light for use with autofocus and automatic exposure functions. Due to the way light is broken down and filtered with a linear polariser, the accuracy of the camera's autofocus and automatic exposure is compromised during use. When light becomes circularly polarised, it allows the use of these functions. This filter is recommended when you are not using the camera's built-in exposure metering or autofocus. It is uncoated and offers an average light transmission of approximately 40%.
