This filter works by diffusing the light entering the lens through small aberrations; by spreading the light more evenly, it creates a soft halo rather than a sharp, well-defined image as when shooting without a filter. This filter has a density of 1, providing a mild softening effect.
Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting it in precision metal rings.
