Contrast control is difficult in bright outdoor conditions. Exposing for highlights or shadows will leave the other severely under or overexposed.
Low Contrast filters create a small amount of "localised" flare near the highlight areas in the image. This reduces contrast by lightening neighbouring shadow areas, whilst leaving the highlights almost unchanged.
Soft Contrast filters include a light absorption element which, without exposure compensation, will reduce contrast by also darkening the highlights. Use this latter filter when lighter shadows are not desired. In both cases, the slight flare produced by the highlights is sometimes used as a lighting effect.
Tiffen received a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for the innovative design of this popular filter for film and television.
