The Tiffen 6 x 6" Linear Polarising Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering polarised light due to reflections from non-metallic surfaces. Sunlight becomes naturally partially polarised by reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing light to scatter as haze. A polarising filter organises and filters this polarised light directionally, perpendicular to the reflected light, allowing much of this light to be absorbed. This results in a noticeable reduction in reflections and glare from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage. A linear polariser differs from a circular polariser in that it does not contain an additional quarter-wave plate. The addition of a quarter-wave plate serves to circularly polarise linearly polarised light for use with autofocus and auto-exposure functions. Due to the way light is broken down and filtered with a linear polariser, the accuracy of the camera's autofocus and auto-exposure is compromised during use. When light becomes circularly polarised, it allows the use of these functions. This filter is recommended when not using the camera's exposure metering or autofocus. It is uncoated and offers an average light transmission of approximately 40%.
