The Tiffen 6.6 x 6.6" linear polarising filter helps reduce reflections and glare by filtering polarised light due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. Sunlight naturally becomes partially polarised when it reflects off the electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter as haze. A polarising filter organises and filters this light directionally polarised perpendicular to the reflected light, allowing much of this light to be absorbed. This results in a notable reduction of reflections and glare on non-metallic surfaces and increased saturation of skies and vegetation.

A linear polariser differs from a circular polariser in that it does not contain an additional quarter-wave plate. The addition of a quarter-wave plate serves to circularly polarise linearly polarised light for use with autofocus and exposure functions. Due to the way light is broken down and filtered with a linear polariser, the accuracy of the camera's autofocus and exposure is distorted during use. When light becomes circularly polarised, it allows the use of these functions.

This filter is recommended when not using integrated exposure metering or autofocus. It is uncoated and offers an average light transmission of approximately 40%.

Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology; a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and sanding it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.
