The Tiffen 6.6 x 6.6" Soft/FX Black Pro-Mist 1/4 filter is a combination of the Soft/FX and Black Pro-Mist filters. The 1/2 density of the Soft/FX provides slight softening and diffuses bright light entering the lens to produce a halo effect. Although the resulting image appears softer and more ethereal, there is little loss of sharpness or detail. This filter works by diffusing light entering the lens with small aberrations; by distributing light more evenly, a soft halo is created rather than the sharp, well-defined image obtained without a filter.

The Black Pro-Mist helps reduce highlight values whilst slightly reducing overall contrast. This filter is particularly useful for smoothing and softening facial wrinkles and other imperfections. Although designed for cinematographic use, this filter can also be used for fashion and beauty applications. Unlike a traditional diffusion or blur filter, Pro-Mist filters result in little loss of detail across the entire image. The 1/4 density offers more reduction of contrast and highlights than the 1/8, but less than the 1/2, whilst allowing for soft, pastel light quality.

Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 6.6 x 6.6" / 167.6 x 167.6 mm.
