The Tiffen 6.6 x 6.6" Soft/FX Black Pro-Mist 3 Filter is a combination of Soft/FX and Black Pro-Mist filters. The 1/2 density of the Soft/FX provides slight softening and diffuses strong light entering the lens to produce a luminous effect. Whilst the resulting image appears softer and more ethereal, there is little loss of clarity or detail. This filter works by diffusing the light entering the lens with small aberrations; by distributing the light more evenly, a soft halo is created rather than the sharp, well-defined image obtained without a filter. The Black Pro-Mist helps to reduce highlight values whilst slightly decreasing overall contrast. This filter is particularly useful for smoothing and softening facial wrinkles and other imperfections. Whilst designed for cinematographic use, this filter can also be used for fashion and beauty applications. Unlike a traditional diffusion or blur filter, Pro-Mist filters result in little loss of detail across the entire image. Density 3 provides more contrast and highlight reduction than density 2, but less than density 4, whilst allowing for a soft, pastel light quality. Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and polishing it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.
