The Tiffen 95mm Coarse Thread Linear Polariser filter helps reduce reflections and glare by filtering light that has become polarised due to reflection off a non-metallic surface. Sunlight becomes naturally partially polarised by reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarising filter organises and filters this directionally polarised light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing much of this light to be absorbed. This results in a notable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A linear polariser differs from a circular polariser in that it does not have a quarter-wave plate to allow the use of autofocus and auto-exposure functions. Linear polarisers are ideally suited for use with manual devices, such as view cameras, which do not rely on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.

Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting it in precision metal rings.
