The Tiffen 95mm (Coarse Thread) Solid Infrared (IR) Neutral Density 0.9 Filter has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve results that would otherwise be unattainable. This filter provides a clearer, purer neutral density than that provided by standard ND filters. The advantage is that it works better with today's high-definition cameras and lenses. Thanks to this improved clarity, stronger grade ND filters can be used whilst allowing the photographer to adjust exposure without affecting colour balance.
ND filters appear grey and reduce the amount of light reaching either a digital camera's sensor or a traditional camera's film plane. Neutral Density filters are used to create unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of water flowing from a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. As they allow the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would not normally be possible to capture without the filter. And as they can also help control your depth of field, they allow you to photograph with wider apertures. Ultimately, their value lies in the help they provide in avoiding overly bright and washed-out images taken in bright light.
A 0.9 Neutral Density filter (3 stops) begins to show significant blur in the shot. At this point, you can create real motion in city traffic or really isolate your subject from the background since you'll be photographing with a much wider aperture.
Water white glass, incorporating ColorCore technology, is characterised by high transmission quality. Typically, it transmits 98-99% of light. It also features anti-glare and anti-reflective qualities that make it useful in a wide range of uses, including the film industry, shop windows and art exhibitions. The glass is virtually flawless and is becoming increasingly prevalent in digital equipment.
Reduces infrared leakage above 700nm
This is particularly important as it now allows the use of higher grade neutral density filters required for high-definition cameras whilst maintaining complete colour balance
Neutral Density filters have four main uses
- To allow the use of slow shutter speeds, particularly with high ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds or cars
- To decrease depth of field by allowing the use of wider apertures, which helps separate subjects from their background
- To decrease the effective ISO of high-sensitivity films (above ISO 400) and allow their use outdoors in bright situations
- To allow cinema and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes that could cause overexposure
Superior quality
- The biggest Hollywood film studios rely on Tiffen filters for their multi-million dollar productions. The superior quality and design make Tiffen the predominant choice of filmmakers, professional photographers and even NASA
- Tiffen has also received an Emmy from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for its engineering excellence
- Tiffen, a leader in the filter industry, proudly manufactures its filters in the USA
