The Tiffen 4 x 5.65" Black Satin 4 filter can be used to intentionally reduce the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles whilst providing a desired warming effect with granularity across the entire image. This can be useful in creating a more flattering result of a subject, whilst highlights are softened, contrast is reduced and textures appear smoother. Additionally, halation around highlights is created, which can further enhance a subject's appearance or produce a desired effect whilst maintaining overall sharpness.

This filter has a grade of 4. Grades 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 3 and 5 are also available, with the effect of this type of filter becoming approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase.

This filter is constructed from water white glass for increased clarity as well as colour fidelity. It is manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process which involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and polishing it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.
