Tiffen 37 mm 4 Point/2 mm Star Effect Filter
 
The Tiffen 37 mm 4 Point/2 mm Star Effect Filter creates multiple points of light, or "stars", which radiate outward from a central light source. This filter comes in a rotating mount for precise positioning of the star effect.
Wedding photographers will particularly appreciate the value of this filter. For special effects shots, why not offer your client a table photograph of the menu or invitation next to a sparkling candle filled with stars? Night-time shooting? Give that street lamp a different and more dramatic appearance by using the star filter. Any point light source will produce the effect.
Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced by a process which permanently laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass which are ground flat to tolerances of one ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounted in precision aluminium rings.
Note: With an 8-point filter, the numerous star lines may tend to dominate the rest of the image, so use with caution. Generally, medium or wider apertures are sufficient to achieve a good star effect. Always test before critical situations.
- The effect is produced by a series of fine lines etched on the flat optical surface of a clear filter
- The size and brightness of the star lines produced are mainly a function of the size, shape and brightness of the light source: You have additional control through the choice of a particular spacing between the lines on the filter
- These spacings are measured in millimetres and range from 1 mm to 4 mm: A 1 mm spacing has twice as many lines as a 2 mm spacing and will produce a brighter star for a given source
- Lines in a single direction produce a two-pointed star, just a trail across the centre of the light
- Tiffen offers symmetrical 4, 6 and 8 point star effects as well as additional asymmetrical star patterns through their exclusive Hollywood FX series (North, Hyper, Vector and Hollywood star effects)
- Tiffen's ColorCore glass is sealed between two sheets of optical glass. In this way, Tiffen can better control the different densities of their filters and thus create more precise degrees of filtering. This process allows greater colour accuracy compared to simply tinted glass which can be subject to deviations during the tinting process
