Tiffen 49mm 4pt/2mm Grid Star Effect Filter
The Tiffen 49mm 4pt/2mm star filter creates multiple points of light, or "stars", which extend outwards from a central light source. This filter is supplied in a rotating mount for precise placement of the star effect.
Wedding photographers will particularly appreciate the value of this filter. For special effects shots, why not offer your client a table photograph of the menu or invitation next to a twinkling candle filled with stars? Are you photographing at night? Make that street lamp take on a different and more spectacular appearance by using the star filter. Any point light source will produce the effect.
Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced by a process that permanently laminates the filter material between two pieces of optically flat polished glass with tolerances of one ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounts them in precision aluminium rings.
Note: With an 8-point filter, the many star lines may tend to dominate the rest of the image, so use it with care. Generally, medium or larger apertures are sufficient to achieve a good star effect. Always test before critical situations.
- The effect is produced by a series of fine lines etched onto the flat optical surface of a clear filter
- The size and brightness of the star points produced are mainly a function of the size, shape and brightness of the light source: You have additional control through the choice of a particular spacing between the lines on the filter
- These spacings are measured in millimetres and vary from 1 mm to 4 mm: A 1 mm spacing has twice as many lines as a 2 mm spacing and will produce a brighter star for a given source
- Lines in one direction produce a two-pointed star, just a streak through the centre of the light
- Tiffen offers symmetrical 4-, 6- and 8-point star effects as well as additional asymmetrical star patterns through its exclusive Hollywood FX series (North, Hyper, Vector and Hollywood star effects)
- Tiffen's ColorCore glass is sealed between two sheets of optical glass. In this way, Tiffen can better control the different densities of its filters and thus create more precise degrees of filtration. This process allows for greater colour accuracy compared to simply tinted glass which is subject to deviations during the colouring process
