Tiffen 67 mm 4pt/2mm Grid Star Effect Filter
The Tiffen 67 mm 4pt/2mm Star Filter creates multiple points of light, or "stars", that radiate outwards from a central light source. This filter is supplied in a rotating mount for precise placement of the star effect.
Wedding photographers will particularly appreciate the value of this filter. For special effects shots, why not offer your client a table shot of the menu or invitation next to a twinkling candle filled with stars? Night shooting? Give that street lamp a different and more spectacular look by using the star filter. Any point light source will produce the effect.
Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced by a process that permanently laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of one ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounted in precision aluminium rings.
Note: With an 8-point filter, the numerous star rays may tend to dominate the rest of the image, so use it with caution. Generally, medium or larger apertures are sufficient to obtain a good star effect. Always test before critical situations.
- The effect is produced by a series of fine lines etched onto the flat optical surface of a clear filter
- The size and brightness of the star's rays produced are primarily a function of the size, shape and brightness of the light source: You have additional control through the choice of a particular spacing between the lines on the filter
- These spacings are measured in millimetres and range from 1 mm to 4 mm: A 1 mm spacing has twice as many lines as a 2 mm spacing and will produce a brighter star for a given source
- Lines in one direction produce a two-pointed star, just a streak across the centre of the light
- Tiffen offers symmetrical 4, 6 and 8-point star effects as well as additional asymmetrical star patterns through its exclusive Hollywood FX series (North, Hyper, Vector and Hollywood star effects)
- Tiffen's ColorCore glass is sealed between two sheets of optical glass. In this way, Tiffen can better control the different densities of its filters and thus create more precise degrees of filtration. This process allows for greater colour accuracy compared to simply tinted glass which can be subject to variations during the tinting process
