Tiffen 77 mm 4-point/2 mm Grid Star Filter
 
The Tiffen 77 mm 4-point/2 mm Star Filter creates multiple points of light, or "stars", radiating outwards from a central light source. This filter comes in a rotating mount for precise placement of the star effect.
Wedding photographers will especially appreciate the value of this filter. When it comes to special effects shooting, why not offer your client a table shot of the menu or invitation next to a sparkling candle filled with stars? Shooting at night? Give that lamppost a different and more dramatic appearance by using the star filter. Any point light source will produce the effect.
Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced by a process that involves permanently laminating the filter material between two pieces of optical glass that are polished to a tolerance of one ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounted in precision aluminium rings.
Note: With an 8-point filter, the numerous star lines can tend to dominate the rest of the image, so use it with care. Generally, medium or larger apertures are sufficient to achieve a good star effect. Always test before critical situations.
- The effect is produced by a series of fine lines engraved on the flat optical surface of a clear filter
- The size and brightness of the star lines produced are primarily a function of the size, shape and brightness of the light source: You have additional control through the choice of a particular spacing between the lines on the filter
- These spacings are measured in millimetres and range from 1 mm to 4 mm: A 1 mm spacing has twice as many lines as a 2 mm spacing and will produce a brighter star for a given source
- Lines in one direction produce a two-pointed star, just a streak across the centre of the light
- Tiffen offers symmetrical 4-, 6- and 8-point star effects as well as additional asymmetrical star patterns through their exclusive Hollywood FX series (North, Hyper, Vector and Hollywood star effects)
- Tiffen's ColorCore glass is sealed between two sheets of optical glass. In this way, Tiffen can better control the different densities of their filters and thus create more precise degrees of filtration. This process allows for greater colour accuracy compared to simple tinted glass which can be subject to variations during the tinting process
