The Tiffen 49mm Digital Neutral Density Filter Kit is a complete set of filters to help you achieve better shots in bright light as well as create special effects images.
Neutral density filters have several uses and offer the possibility of achieving results that would otherwise be impossible. They allow the photographer to adjust exposure without affecting colour balance. ND filters appear grey and reduce the amount of light reaching the film.
Determining which neutral density filter gives ideal results for a given lighting situation requires knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Generally, the value of 2 stops (ND 0.6) effectively compensates for average situations.
Neutral density filters have four main uses
- To allow the use of slow shutter speeds, particularly with high-speed films, to record movement of subjects such as waterfalls, clouds or cars
- To decrease depth of field by allowing the use of wider apertures, which helps separate subjects from their background
- To decrease the effective ISO sensitivity of high-speed films (above 400 ISO) and allow their use outdoors in bright situations
- To allow cinema and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes that could cause overexposure
Neutral density factors
- ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO sensitivity by one quarter)
- ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO sensitivity by one eighth)
- ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops, reduces ISO sensitivity by one sixteenth)
