Tiffen 58 mm DV Select 3-Filter Kit - 0.6 Neutral Density, Circular Polarising and 1/4 Black ProMist Filters
A Tiffen 0.6 (2 stops) solid neutral density filter has several uses and offers the ability to achieve otherwise impossible results. It allows the photographer to adjust exposure without affecting colour balance. An ND filter appears grey and reduces the amount of light reaching either a digital camera's sensor or the film plane of a traditional camera.
A neutral density filter is used to create unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of a cascading waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. As it allows the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would not normally be possible to capture without the filter. And, as it can also help control your depth of field, it allows you to photograph with wider apertures. Ultimately, its value lies in helping to prevent overly bright and washed-out images taken in bright light.
Determining which neutral density filter gives ideal results for a given lighting situation requires knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Choose the filter strength that adjusts the lighting to stay within the exposure latitude (greatest difference between light/dark values) that still shows detail in the digital or film medium being used.
Black ProMist
is part of the Hollywood FX filter series. The Black Pro-Mist creates a moderate softening of the image and moderate to strong glare from reflections, but without as much lightening effect in shadow areas.
Here's another tool to add to your arsenal for portraits. Part of Tiffen's award-winning FX filter series, the Black Pro-Mist gives you the ability to add a new dimension to your images.
Part of the difference between an ordinary photograph and a "great" photograph lies in attention to detail - and with Tiffen's Pro-Mist filter series, you can adjust your images just enough to set them apart from others. Generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6 - the clear part of the filter allows 4 times more light to pass through compared to the darkest part) effectively compensates for average situations of bright sky versus foreground, and the soft transition applies more often to a scene than the hard transition.
Circular polarising filter
Tiffen polarising filters are used to select which light rays enter your lens. They can eliminate unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colours by providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and modified by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies depending on the rotation of the filter and its orientation to the sun.
Tiffen ColorCore glass is produced by a process that involves permanently laminating the filter material between two pieces of optical glass which are polished to tolerances of one ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounted in precision aluminium rings
Neutral density filters have four main uses
- To allow the use of slow shutter speeds, particularly with high ISOs, to record the movement of subjects such as waterfalls, clouds or cars
- To decrease depth of field by allowing the use of wider apertures, which helps separate subjects from their background
- To decrease the effective ISO of fast films (above ISO 400) and allow their use outdoors in bright situations
sand or other bright scenes that could cause overexposure
Pro Mist filters
- Offers all the advantages of the Pro-Mist filter in a more subtle form
- Glare from reflections is controlled
- Contrast is reduced, but with less shadow lightening for a more delicate effect
- Delicate effect with contained glare from reflections
- Creates a "pastel" soft light effect
Polarising filters
- Eliminates unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass
- Your deep blue sky will become even "bluer"
ColorCore glass
The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the colour and density of their filters, as well as the characteristics of special effects filters with greater precision than conventional dyed-in-the-mass filters, which typically exhibit variations in colour and density. In this way, Tiffen can better control the different densities of their filters and thus create more precise degrees of filtration
