The Formatt 95 mm HD Neutral Density (ND) 0.3 Crown Schott-Desag B270 optical glass filter has multiple uses and offers the ability to achieve otherwise impossible results. They allow photographers to adjust exposure without affecting colour balance. ND filters appear grey and reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for a given lighting situation requires knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6) effectively compensates for average situations.

Neutral density filters have four main uses

- Enable the use of slow shutter speeds, particularly with fast films, to record movement of subjects such as waterfalls, clouds or cars
- Decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures, which helps separate subjects from their background
- Decrease the effective ISO of fast films (above 400 ISO) and allow their use outdoors in bright situations
- Enable film and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to shoot subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes that could cause overexposure
