The Formatt 95 mm HD Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 filter in Schott-Desag B270 Crown optical glass has multiple uses and offers the ability to achieve otherwise impossible results. They allow the photographer to adjust exposure without affecting colour balance. ND filters appear grey and reduce the amount of light reaching the film.
Determining which neutral density filter gives ideal results for a given lighting situation requires knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. In general, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6) effectively compensates for average situations.
Note! Neutral density filters are available in grades of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 stops to meet individual needs
- Formatt's neutral density filters are a response to the many directors of photography and cinematographers who find it important to film at maximum aperture to minimise depth of field - particularly with HD
- In response to professional demand for an optically correct and flawless neutral density filter for HD, Formatt has designed its HD neutral density filters, which are the ultimate solution for enhancing colour contrast and are ideal for normal light reduction
- Available in all popular screw-in round sizes and all standard square sizes
- All Formatt filters are finished with a unique frame offering maximum protection against chipping, surface scratches and allowing easy handling and cleaning
- With the filter description on the top of the frame, filter identification is also much easier, especially when filters are stored in cases outdoors
- Formatt HD neutral density filters have the same densities and light stops as Kodak Wratten standards
Neutral density filters have four main uses
- Allow the use of slow shutter speeds, particularly with fast films, to record movement of subjects such as waterfalls, clouds or cars
- Decrease depth of field by allowing the use of wider apertures, which helps separate subjects from their background
- Decrease the effective ISO of fast films (above 400 ISO) and allow their use outdoors in bright situations
- Allow film and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes that might cause overexposure
Neutral density factors
- ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO by 1/2)
- ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO by 1/4)
- ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO by 1/8)
- ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops, reduces ISO by 1/16)
