The Tiffen 127 mm Linear Polarising Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering light that has become polarised due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.

Sunlight becomes naturally partially polarised by reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing light to scatter into atmospheric haze. A polarising filter organises and filters this directionally polarised light perpendicularly to reflected light, allowing absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction in reflections and glare from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in saturation of skies and foliage.

A linear polariser differs from a circular polariser in that it does not feature a quarter-wave plane that enables the use of autofocus and auto-exposure functions. Linear polarisers are best suited for use with manual cameras, such as view cameras, which do not rely on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.

Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a process that laminates the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, polishes it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounts it in precision metal rings.
