The Tiffen 138 mm Linear Polarising Filter helps reduce reflections and glare by filtering light that has been polarised due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. Sunlight naturally becomes partially polarised as it reflects off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into atmospheric haze. A polarising filter arranges and filters this directionally polarised light perpendicular to the reflected light, allowing the absorption of much of this light. The result is a noticeable reduction in glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A linear polariser differs from a circular polariser in that it does not have a quarter-wave plate allowing the use of autofocus and auto-exposure functions. Linear polarisers are better suited to manual cameras, such as large format cameras, which do not rely on internal mechanisms for focus determination or metering settings.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding it flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting it in precision metal rings.
