Neumann KM 184 Octo Set
The KM 184 has the same cardioid capsule as the KM 84, both microphones showing a slight difference in frequency response for 0° angle of incidence. The KM 184 shows a slight emphasis above 9 kHz - a characteristic introduced with great success on the KM 140 model. Compared to the KM 84, which is neutral in this frequency band, the result is a more lively, fresher tonal balance.
This difference is achieved by a slight modification of the rear openings of the capsule, not by playing with internal resonances.
Electrical specifications
The microphones of the 180 series have the same transformerless output circuit as the KM 100 system, giving them excellent technical characteristics:
Compared to the KM 84 model, the dynamic range of the KM 184 is 24 dB higher, notably thanks to a self-noise level reduced to only 22 dB (CCIR) and a higher maximum acceptable sound pressure level (up to 138 dB SPL).
The microphones operate without problems, even if the recorder input is unbalanced (which is the case on some portable DAT recorders, for example).
As with all Neumann microphones, the KM 18x output is balanced, and the microphones are powered by phantom power (48 Volts).
Economy
The 180 series microphones are a good choice for all users looking for a high-quality miniature microphone, but who don't necessarily need a complex modular system like the KM 100, which is still part of the Neumann product family.
The mechanical construction is simplified: for example, on the KM 18x, it is impossible to separate the capsule and the output stage. Consequently, this family of microphones constitutes an economical alternative, whilst guaranteeing the electro-acoustic characteristics that users expect from Neumann microphones.
Features
- Neumann KM 184 condenser microphone (Stereo pair)
- From the "fet100" series with transformerless microphone circuit
- Capsule with cardioid directivity
- Exceptionally low self-noise (16dB A-weighted)
- Exceptionally high overload capability (up to 138dB SPL before overload)
- Exceptionally clear sound reproduction without colouration
- Very smooth frequency curves parallel to 0 degree sound incidence
- Pressure gradient transducer
- Cardioid directivity
