Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio HD8 Add an all-in-one live streaming switcher to your television studio, remote production or performance venue with the Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio HD8. This compact and redesigned live TV switcher is perfect for any streaming production, offering eight 3G-SDI inputs supporting video up to 1080p60, built-in live streaming, USB webcam support, a 58-channel audio mixer, chroma keying, a DVE, transitions, media players, internal recording and intercom support. The switcher is also compatible with Blackmagic Cloud, so your programme recordings can be available immediately from anywhere in the world.
The switcher features a brand new button layout and is made from polycarbonate, making it much lighter than its predecessor. It offers many layout improvements with professional buttons, LCD screens for labels and an easy-to-navigate button layout. It includes all the features you need for studio operation, including intercom compatibility, GPI and tally interfaces, timecode, a MADI input supporting up to 32 input channels and 64 output channels for use with external mixers; input audio can be mapped to any of the eight SDI outputs as well as the analogue audio input and output.
The HD8 features built-in live streaming and can connect to Blackmagic Cloud to share your programme for a seamless remote workflow. It also features redundant power and an Ethernet connection to keep your production running if a connection is lost. Two USB-C connectors are available for use either as a webcam when connected to a computer, or to use an external drive to record your programme. Live Production You have an incredibly powerful 8-input switcher with programme outputs and two auxiliary outputs, so you have everything you need for mobile production. This means you can connect up to 8 cameras. In addition, you benefit from professional camera control, an intercom system and audio mixing, all integrated into a familiar broadcast panel. Distribution With a built-in hardware streaming engine, you can broadcast your event live to a global audience. Recording to H.264 files with AAC audio means you get the correct format for uploading to YouTube. Additionally, you can share live broadcasts with your audience using auxiliary outputs and large screens and projectors. Production Switcher Control You have a broadcast-quality advanced mixer, with built-in ATEM Advanced Chroma Keyer, Fairlight audio mixer, DVE, image storage for graphics, and much more. Most features can be controlled from the front panel, or you can use the free ATEM Software Control on macOS or Windows to access even more features. Easy setup and use Simply press any button on the front panel programme row to switch between video sources. Or you can preset a source on the preview row then choose between a cut or transitions with effects by selecting the cut or auto buttons. You can choose from captivating transitions, such as mix, or more spectacular effects, such as dip to colour, DVE squeeze and DVE push. You can even add a DVE for picture-in-picture effects with custom graphics. There are also media players, which allow you to store graphics with alpha layers for titles and graphics that you can load as live video inputs. You can then stream the results live. Redesigned front panel The front panel includes buttons for selecting sources, triggering transitions and configuring video effects. Furthermore, the buttons are the same high-end type used on expensive broadcast switchers. You also have a built-in T-bar for manual transition control. The front panel even features an innovative audio mixing control area with live monitoring on a dedicated LCD screen. There are also buttons for recording and streaming control, as well as live auxiliary switching that allows you to switch the auxiliary outputs between the 8 cameras, programme, preview or multiview. Broadcast-style Mix/Effects switching The ATEM Television Studio uses a professional programme/preview style of operation, exactly as major broadcasters use live production switchers. However, the ATEM Television Studio can be switched to A/B switching style, which is easier when used by volunteers or community groups. However, if you want to use the switcher like a broadcast professional, then programme/preview is perfect. This means a source will not be broadcast until you press the cut or auto button. This two-step process means you see what you select before putting it to air, thereby reducing errors. Add captivating video effects One of the advantages of the ATEM Television Studio is the range of built-in professional video effects. The cut button ensures an instant cut when switching between sources. The T-bar can be used for transitions with video effects, or you can perform a transition automatically by pressing the auto button. Auto uses the transition duration set in the system control. You can also select the type of effect you want, including mix, which performs a smooth transition between sources, or dip which performs a transition via a third video source, such as a colour generator. There is a wide range of SMPTE wipes included, as well as DVE effects that slide or squeeze the image off screen when transitioning between video sources. Creative transitions The ATEM Television Studio includes the same type of transitions found on expensive broadcast switchers. This means effects and transitions can be customised in many different ways, making them surprisingly powerful. You will never stop finding new ways to use them. This is because all transitions can be customised by adjusting parameters such as duration, border colour, border width, position and direction. You can even use the DVE with a wipe transition, where the DVE moves a graphic across the edge of the wipe. This is called a graphic wipe and it is often used in sports broadcasting. The transition preview button can be used to configure effects offline, which is ideal for eliminating errors. Built-in DVE The ATEM Television Studio HD features an independent DVE that allows you to reposition graphics and create picture-in-picture compositions. You get incredible quality and the DVE supports position, resize and scaling, all in real time. The DVE allows you to create professional picture-in-picture effects with customisable 3D borders, shadows and lighting. DVEs can also be used to create stunning DVE transitions with squeeze, slide and push effects to add excitement to your programming. You can even combine DVE transitions with custom graphics to create your own graphic wipe transitions. Additionally, there is also a SuperSource multi-layer processing engine with 4 additional DVEs. Supports internal media The integrated media pool stores broadcast-quality graphics and animations that can be played back using the built-in media players. The media players appear as independent sources, so you don't need to waste SDI inputs on graphics. For optimal quality, all media supports the RGB colour space with alpha channel, allowing transparency and layering. The media pool can hold 20 still images in HD. Animated graphic clips for animations and stingers can hold up to 400 frames in 720HD and 200 frames in 1080HD. ATEM Software Control allows you to upload and manage media. You can even prepare graphics in Adobe Photoshop and then upload them to the media pool using the free ATEM Photoshop plug-in. Includes 4 ATEM Advanced chroma keyers The ATEM Television Studio is perfect for news and studio presentation work as it features 4 ATEM Advanced Chroma Keyers for green screen keying effects. The chroma keyers are incredibly powerful and include features such as a colour picker to sample background colours and automatically generate keying parameters. You get precise controls for edges and lighting, and there is even a colour corrector for the foreground, allowing you to match foreground and background layers for perfect composites. You can even use it for title keying by creating graphics with a green or blue background. With 4 ATEM Advanced Chroma Keyers, the ATEM Television Studio is perfect for creating virtual sets with fixed cameras. SuperSource Processing In addition to the DVE in the ATEM Television Studio, there is also a powerful SuperSource multilayer processor. SuperSource gives you 4 additional DVE layers plus a background layer, all composited as an additional input source. Any video input can be used as a source for each DVE, then everything is composited over a custom background from the media pool or live video. SuperSource is perfect for creating multiple picture-in-picture keys with presenters, as you can set up the effect so viewers can see each presenter, all within an elegant graphic. SuperSource is like having a completely independent multilayer VFX mixer built in. 8 x 3G-SDI inputs with standards conversion The ATEM Television Studio HD features 8 independent 3G-SDI inputs, with each input having its own dedicated standards converter. This means it is possible to convert any 1080HD or 720HD input source to the switcher's video standard. This means each SDI input on the switcher could operate with a different television standard and all inputs would simply work.
Audio channels 1, 2, 3 and 4 from the SDI inputs can also be manually routed to different audio channels built into the programme and auxiliary outputs. Additionally, you can even route audio channels 1 and 2 from the SDI inputs to the MADI digital audio output, so you can send the switcher's input audio to an external sound engineer for mixing. 3G-SDI outputs with embedded 16-channel audio The ATEM Television Studio features nine 3G-SDI programme outputs, giving you plenty of connections to send a separate programme return feed to all your cameras. This is important because the SDI programme return is used to send tally, intercom and control information to the cameras.
You also have two dedicated auxiliary outputs to feed stage monitors and master recorders. These auxiliary outputs can be switched live using dedicated buttons on the control panel. Aux 1 even includes an on-screen counter for presenter monitoring. Additionally, you can manually route audio across the 16 built-in audio channels of the SDI outputs. For camera monitoring, there is a dedicated 3G-SDI and HDMI output for multiview. 16-source multiview on a single monitor For larger live productions with multiple cameras, it is essential to see all your video sources simultaneously on a single monitor. The ATEM Television Studio HD includes a professional multiview that allows you to view all video inputs, preview and programme on a single SDI or HDMI monitor. You can even send the multiview to the auxiliary outputs. Each camera view includes tally indicators, so you know when each source is on air, and each view has custom labels and audio level indicators. You can fully customise the multiview layout with up to 16 simultaneous views. You can also select one of the additional status views that allows you to monitor recording, streaming and audio mixer status, directly from the multiview. Add audio extension for more microphones If you are building a podcasting studio or need more microphones, the ATEM Microphone Converter allows audio input extension. It connects to the ATEM Television Studio via the MADI port, so there is no complex setup and you can daisy-chain units to add more inputs. Each converter has 4 analogue inputs that are selectable between mic/line and feature phantom power.
The design features incredible quality with an extremely low noise floor of -129 dBV, a dynamic range of 131 dB(A), low distortion of 0.002% and uniform tolerances across all channels. It even uses 8 separate ADCs on each input to collectively extend the dynamic range. Additionally, it features a fun HDMI monitoring output with scrolling audio waveforms. Record directly to internal cloud storage or USB drives The ATEM Television Studio HD supports recording to external USB drives. Or if an optional M.2 flash drive is installed, you can record directly to internal cloud storage. The internal storage as well as all external USB drives will be available for sharing over the local Ethernet network, so others can work on post-production tasks such as editing, colour grading and graphics preparation.
All recordings are in H.264 format with AAC audio for broadcast video quality and reduced file sizes. You can even connect multiple USB drives, so recording will continue if one drive fills up. You also have buttons on the control panel to start recording, and you can see the recording status in the multiview. Compatible with all software supporting USB webcams You can use any video software with the ATEM Television Studio HD because the USB connection emulates a webcam. This means you can connect to a computer and use any video software compatible with a webcam. The software is tricked into thinking the ATEM Television Studio HD is an ordinary webcam, but it is in fact a live production switcher. This ensures complete compatibility with any video software and in full 1080HD quality.
Imagine presenting from a professional broadcast studio to software such as Zoom, Teams or Skype. For streaming, the webcam output also works with streaming software such as Open Broadcaster, XSplit Broadcaster, and more. Includes the free ATEM Software Control Panel The ATEM Software Control application unlocks the hidden power of the ATEM Television Studio HD by providing access to all the mixer's features. ATEM Software Control has a visual mixer user interface with parameter palettes for making adjustments. Although you can connect via USB, if you connect via Ethernet, you can run multiple copies of ATEM Software Control on different computers.
The software allows you to switch live, mix audio, colour correct cameras and manage media. You can also create and run complex macros from the software. Additionally, you can save the mixer state as an XML file to recall jobs later. You can even control the triggering of external HyperDeck recorders. Localised in 13 popular languages The ATEM Television Studio HD supports multiple languages in menus and in the ATEM control software, allowing you to customise it in your preferred language. You get support for English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, German, French, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Polish and Ukrainian.
Simply access the settings menu to change the language, or you can always switch to another language at any time. Once a language is selected, the menus on all LCD screens will switch to the chosen language. Multilingual support means that the ATEM Television Studio HD is perfect for producing live productions anywhere in the world and with any team. Flexible and redundant power supply The all-in-one design of the ATEM Television Studio includes a built-in power supply, so you don't need to carry an external power supply. Simply plug it into any mains socket and start live production. The international power supply works automatically from 100 to 240 VAC, so you can use it anywhere in the world. Additionally, the ATEM Television Studio includes both AC and DC power connections.
A broadcast-quality 12 VDC XLR power connection is included, perfect for backup power or for running on batteries. This means you can use it in extremely remote locations. Furthermore, if the internal power supply were to fail, you can simply connect an external DC power supply to continue operating. Designed to be easy to maintain With so many built-in features, it is essential that the ATEM Television Studio can be easily serviced. Additionally, there is already a great deal of built-in redundancy, with 4 Ethernet connections, 9 SDI programme outputs, 2 USB ports and 2 power connections. However, if someone trips over a cable and breaks a connector, you need to be able to repair the connector at low cost.
All the internal electronics are modular, so any qualified technician can purchase a replacement and easily swap out the board. This includes connector PCBs, which can be purchased separately. All the technician has to do is remove the bottom cover and replace the PCB. A large broadcaster could even purchase the boards as a spare parts kit. Applications Compact broadcast trucks
With the all-in-one design, you can build a new generation of ultra-compact broadcast trucks. You don't need equipment racks, so you can eliminate clutter for a much more pleasant working environment. For added stability, you can even mount the integrated mixer into the desk.
