Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens
A long-range telephoto zoom lens characterised by a sophisticated optical design and advanced image stabilisation technologies, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens is part of the prestigious L series developed for full-frame EOS digital SLRs. A fluorite element and a Super UD element have been incorporated into the lens construction, and both contribute to reducing aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range to deliver remarkable clarity, image sharpness, and faithful colour reproduction. An Air Sphere coating has also been applied to the lens elements to reduce stray reflections and ghosting for richer, higher-contrast images. Benefiting from the lens's optical components, an effective four-stop image stabiliser helps to minimise the appearance of camera shake and can be dedicated to different shooting styles. Furthermore, a redesigned rotary-type zoom ring combines with an internal focusing mechanism and an ultrasonic motor to provide fast, intuitive handling for the benefit of handheld shooting. Positioned as a versatile option for sports and wildlife photographers, this lens's list of attributes makes it a viable telephoto zoom for a variety of photographic applications.
Housed in a weather-resistant barrel, this lens also features fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements to protect against fingerprints and smears that could affect image quality. The zoom control is complemented by a dedicated tension ring for adjusting zoom torque. Additionally, other refined design features include a tripod collar that can be attached or removed with the lens mounted on the camera, and an included lens hood that allows easy control of special filters with the hood in place.
The telephoto zoom lens is compatible with full-frame EF digital SLRs, as well as APS-C format models where it provides an equivalent focal length range of 160-640 mm.
A fluorite element and a Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element help to correct chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for a high degree of sharpness, clarity, and colour accuracy.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to the lens elements to reduce stray reflections and ghosting in backlit conditions in order to maintain light transmission and high contrast in bright lighting conditions.
An optical image stabiliser helps to minimise the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Additionally, three dedicated image stabilisation modes are available — Standard, Panning, and During Exposure Only — and can be selectively used to suit a variety of shooting styles.
A ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM), combined with optimised autofocus algorithms and a high-speed processor, enables fast, precise, and quiet autofocus as well as manual correction at any time.
The rotary-type zoom ring provides precise adjustment between zoom positions, particularly when shooting handheld, and a zoom torque adjustment ring allows easy adjustment of zoom tension for personalised control.
A weather-resistant design protects the lens from dust and moisture to allow use in challenging conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear elements of the lens for extra protection against fingerprints and smears.
The nine-blade rounded diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality that lends itself to the use of shallow depth-of-field and selective focus techniques.
A redesigned tripod collar can be attached to or removed from the lens without having to dismount the lens from the camera.
The included ET-83D lens hood incorporates a side window to facilitate adjustment of rotating filters with the hood in place.
